Ralph Blane

Ralph Blane (1914–1965) was an American lyricist and composer whose work became closely associated with MGM’s classic film musicals. He collaborated frequently with composer Hugh Martin, and together they wrote enduring songs for the studio, including “The Trolley Song” and “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas.” Blane’s songwriting helped define the sound of mid‑20th‑century Hollywood, combining memorable melodies with lyrics crafted for character and story. His credits are especially linked to the MGM musical tradition, where his songs were introduced by major screen performers and went on to become standards beyond their original films. He died in 1965.
