Richard Brautigan

Richard Brautigan (1935–1984) was an American writer whose work is often linked to postmodern fiction and the counterculture of the 1960s. He is best known for the novels *Trout Fishing in America* (1967) and *In Watermelon Sugar* (1968), which blend humor, surreal imagery, and fragmented narrative. Brautigan also published poetry and short prose, developing a distinctive, deadpan voice that influenced later experimental writers. Born in Tacoma, Washington, he spent significant time in San Francisco during the era’s literary ferment. His writing frequently explores loneliness, consumer culture, and pastoral longing through playful, unconventional forms. He died in 1984.
