Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II

Richard Rodgers (1902–1979) and Oscar Hammerstein II (1895–1960) were an American musical-theatre songwriting team: Rodgers composed the music, while Hammerstein wrote lyrics and librettos. After Hammerstein’s earlier collaborations with Jerome Kern, the pair joined forces in the 1940s and helped reshape Broadway by integrating song, character, and story. Their stage works include *Oklahoma!* (1943), *Carousel* (1945), *South Pacific* (1949), *The King and I* (1951), and *The Sound of Music* (1959). Their shows became enduring standards, widely revived and adapted, and their partnership remains central to the history of American musical theatre.
