Richard Watson Gilder

Richard Watson Gilder (1844–1909) was an American poet and editor. Born in Bordentown, New Jersey, he grew up in a family active in publishing and journalism. After early work in newspaper and magazine offices, he became associated with *Scribner’s Monthly* and, when it was renamed, served for many years as editor of *The Century Magazine*, helping shape one of the leading American periodicals of his era. Gilder also published volumes of poetry and was known for lyric verse and public-minded themes. He was active in New York literary and civic circles and is buried in Sleepy Hollow Cemetery.
