Richard Whately
Richard Whately (1787–1863) was an English Anglican churchman, logician, and economist who served as Archbishop of Dublin from 1831 until his death. Educated at Oriel College, Oxford, he became a leading figure in nineteenth-century logic and argumentation, publishing the influential textbooks *Elements of Logic* (1826) and *Elements of Rhetoric* (1828). Whately was also active in public debate on political economy and social policy, and he held the post of Drummond Professor of Political Economy at Oxford (1829–1831).
