Robert Purvis

Robert Purvis (1810–1898) was an African American abolitionist and civil-rights activist based in Philadelphia. Born in Charleston, South Carolina, he moved north and became a prominent leader in the antislavery movement. Purvis was active in the Pennsylvania Anti-Slavery Society and served as its president. He also worked with the Underground Railroad, aiding freedom seekers and supporting antislavery organizing. Known for his advocacy of equal rights, he participated in campaigns against slavery and racial discrimination and collaborated with other reformers of his era.
