Robert South (1634–1716) was an English Anglican churchman and celebrated preacher. Educated at Westminster School and Christ Church, Oxford, he became Public Orator of the University of Oxford, a post in which his Latin eloquence and wit brought him wide notice. Ordained in the Church of England, he served as a royal chaplain and held the living of Islip in Oxfordshire. South was a staunch defender of Anglican orthodoxy and a prominent voice in Restoration religious and political debates. He is best remembered for his sermons, admired for their forceful style, sharp satire, and moral clarity, and widely read long after his death.
