Rosalind Russell
Rosalind Russell grew up in an Irish-Catholic family in Connecticut. She attended college in New York; her parents thought she was studying to become a teacher, but she was really studying to become a comedic actress. After appearing in some Broadway shows in New York, Russell went to Hollywood. She went on to star in numerous comedies in the 1930s and ‘40s, quickly rising to fame and becoming best known for her role in His Girl Friday (1940). In her nearly 40-year career, Russell won five Golden Globes, as well as a Tony Award for her performance in the Broadway show Wonderful Town (1953). Russell died of breast cancer at age 69 in 1976.
