Roscoe Pound
Roscoe Pound (1870–1964) was an American legal scholar and jurist who helped shape modern legal thought. Born in Lincoln, Nebraska, he became a leading advocate of “sociological jurisprudence,” urging courts and lawmakers to consider law’s social purposes and practical effects. Pound taught at the University of Nebraska and later joined Harvard Law School, where he served as Dean from 1916 to 1936. He was also a professor at Harvard for many years and wrote influential works on legal philosophy, the administration of justice, and the role of courts in society. Pound’s ideas influenced generations of lawyers, judges, and legal academics.
