Rupert Hughes

Rupert Hughes (1872–1956) was an American novelist, playwright, biographer, and motion-picture writer and director. Born in Lancaster, Missouri, he became a prolific author across genres, publishing fiction as well as historical and biographical works. Hughes wrote the multi-volume *George Washington: A Biography* and also produced studies of other American figures. In the early film era he worked in Hollywood, writing and directing for the screen and helping shape popular storytelling in silent and early sound cinema. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I. Hughes was the uncle of aviator and industrialist Howard Hughes.
