Ryunosuke Satoro

Ryūnosuke Akutagawa (芥川 龍之介; 1892–1927) was a Japanese writer known for short stories that helped shape modern Japanese literature. Born in Tokyo, he studied English literature at Tokyo Imperial University and began publishing fiction while still a student. Akutagawa drew on classical Japanese sources as well as contemporary life, often exploring moral ambiguity, psychological tension, and the instability of truth. His best-known works include “Rashōmon” and “In a Grove,” later adapted by Akira Kurosawa in the film *Rashomon*. He died by suicide in 1927. Japan’s Akutagawa Prize, established in 1935, commemorates him.
