Saint Augustine

Augustine was born in 354 in present-day Algeria, then part of the Roman Empire. Augustine was educated in Latin literature, rhetoric, and religion, though he left the Christian religion to join a Gnostic sect as a young man. For many years, Augustine worked as a grammar teacher, eventually moving to Rome and later Milan to teach. In 386, Augustine converted to Christianity, and he was ordained a priest in 391. Augustine was also one of the most prolific Latin writers of his era, and his writings, including Confessions and City of God, are considered influential in the development of the Christian religion. He is also considered a saint in the Eastern Orthodox Church.
