Saint Francis of Assisi
St. Francis of Assisi grew up with an opulent lifestyle, but when leaving for war in 1204, he had a vision that led him to forego his materialistic lifestyle. Francis went on a pilgrimage to Rome, joining the poor, and the experience inspired him to live in poverty. Francis began preaching back home on the streets of Assisi, and soon gained a large following. He formed the Order of Friars Minor, which was authorized by Pope Innocent III in 1210, and then formed the Order of St. Clare and the Third Order of Saint Francis. Francis was never officially ordained to Catholic priesthood, but was pronounced a saint by Pope Gregory IX in 1228, two years after his death.
