Sallust
Gaius Sallustius Crispus (c. 86–35 BCE), known as Sallust, was a Roman historian and politician of the late Republic. Born in Amiternum, he pursued a public career aligned with Julius Caesar’s faction and served as tribune of the plebs in 52 BCE. After political setbacks, he turned to writing history in a concise, moralizing style that criticized corruption and the decline of Roman civic virtue. His best-known works include *Bellum Catilinae* (on Catiline’s conspiracy) and *Bellum Jugurthinum* (on the Jugurthine War). He also composed the fragmentary *Historiae*. Sallust died in Rome.
