Salman Rushdie

Sir Ahmed Salman Rushdie (born 19 June 1947) is a British-Indian novelist and essayist. Born in Bombay (now Mumbai), India, he was educated at Rugby School and the University of Cambridge. Rushdie rose to international prominence with *Midnight’s Children* (1981), a landmark novel of postcolonial India that won the Booker Prize and later the “Booker of Bookers.” His 1988 novel *The Satanic Verses* sparked global controversy and threats that profoundly affected his life and work. He has written fiction and nonfiction, including *Shame*, *The Moor’s Last Sigh*, and essays on literature and politics. Rushdie was knighted in 2007.
