Sheila Kitzinger

Sheila Kitzinger (1929–2015) was a British social anthropologist and a leading childbirth educator and activist. She became widely known for her work on pregnancy, labour, and women’s experiences of maternity care, combining research with practical guidance for parents. Kitzinger wrote many influential books, including *The Experience of Childbirth*, which helped shape public discussion of birth and women’s autonomy in childbirth. Through her teaching, writing, and public speaking, she advocated for informed choice, respectful care, and greater attention to the emotional and cultural dimensions of birth. Her work remains widely read in childbirth education and maternity advocacy.
