Shel Silverstein
Shel Silverstein (1930–1999) was an American poet, children’s book author, songwriter, cartoonist, and illustrator. Born in Chicago, Illinois, he became widely known for his playful, often subversive verse and distinctive line drawings. His best-known books include *The Giving Tree* (1964), *Where the Sidewalk Ends* (1974), *A Light in the Attic* (1981), and *Falling Up* (1996), which helped shape modern children’s poetry. Silverstein also wrote songs recorded by major artists, including “A Boy Named Sue,” made famous by Johnny Cash. He contributed cartoons and writing to *Playboy* magazine and worked across genres throughout his career.
