Sigmund Freud

Sigmund Freud was the inventor of psychoanalysis and the founder of modern psychology. At age 17, Freud entered the University of Vienna, graduating with an MD in 1881. In 1886, Freud started his own practice, which specialized in nervous disorders. By 1896, Freud had coined the term “psychoanalysis” to refer to the clinical method he developed, which included having patients talk about their symptoms while under hypnosis. Attracting many followers to his movement, Freud founded the International Psychoanalytic Association in 1910. Freud moved from Vienna to London in 1938 to escape the Nazi threat. A lifelong smoker, Freud died of cancer of the mouth in 1939.
