Quotes
Socrates
Very little is known of Socrates himself, as nothing that can be directly ascribed to him survives. His father Sophroniscus, may have been a stonemason or sculptor, and his mother Phaenarete was a maia or midwife. He married late, and had three sons with Xanthippe, a much younger woman. Even his own career is unknown, though contemporary records do indicate that he did serve in the Athenian military, and sat on the boule, a form of council. He is best known as a philosopher through the works of his students, such as Plato. He was tried and executed for corrupting the minds of youth in 399 BC.
