Stephen Ambrose

Stephen E. Ambrose (1936–2002) was an American historian and popular biographer best known for narrative works on U.S. military history and exploration. Born in Lovington, Illinois, he earned a PhD in history at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. Ambrose taught at several universities, including the University of New Orleans, and served as a historical consultant for President Dwight D. Eisenhower. His books reached wide audiences, notably *Band of Brothers* (1992), about Easy Company in World War II, and *Undaunted Courage* (1996), a biography of Meriwether Lewis and the Lewis and Clark expedition. He died in Bay St. Louis, Mississippi.
