Stephen Girard

Stephen Girard (1750–1831) was a French-born American merchant, banker, and philanthropist who became one of the wealthiest figures in the early United States. After arriving in North America as a young man, he built a successful shipping and trading business and later expanded into banking in Philadelphia. During the War of 1812 he provided major financial support to the federal government, helping stabilize public credit. Girard is best remembered for his charitable legacy: in his will he left most of his fortune to public purposes, including the creation of Girard College for orphaned boys and significant civic improvements in Philadelphia. He was not primarily a literary author.
