Sue Townsend

Sue Townsend (1946–2014) was an English novelist and playwright, born in Leicester. She is best known for creating the Adrian Mole series, which began with *The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole, Aged 13¾* (1982) and became a widely read comic portrait of British life. Townsend also wrote novels, plays, and screen work, and her writing often combined sharp social observation with humour and empathy for ordinary people. Her later Adrian Mole books followed the character into adulthood, sustaining the series’ popularity over decades. Townsend’s work earned major recognition, including the Whitbread Book of the Year award for *The Queen and I* (1992).
