Sushruta

Sushruta is an ancient Indian physician-surgeon traditionally regarded as the author or compiler of the *Sushruta Samhita*, a major Sanskrit medical treatise and one of the foundational texts of Ayurveda, especially noted for its emphasis on surgery. The work describes surgical instruments, operative techniques, and clinical training, and it also treats anatomy, diagnosis, and therapeutics. Sushruta’s historical identity is uncertain: he is often presented as a teacher in classical Indian tradition, but the text likely reflects multiple layers of composition and later redaction. He is generally placed in antiquity, commonly dated to the late 1st millennium BCE or early 1st millennium CE.
