Sylvia Earle

Sylvia A. Earle (born 1935) is an American marine biologist, oceanographer, explorer, and author known for her advocacy for ocean conservation. Trained as a scientist, she has led and participated in numerous ocean expeditions and has worked to expand public understanding of marine ecosystems. Earle served as chief scientist of the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), bringing scientific expertise to national ocean policy. She is also recognized for pioneering deep-sea exploration, including work with submersibles and underwater habitats. Through books, lectures, and public initiatives, she has emphasized the importance of protecting the ocean’s biodiversity and the role of healthy seas in sustaining life on Earth.
