T. DeWitt Talmage

Thomas De Witt Talmage (1832–1902) was an American Presbyterian minister, popular preacher, and author-editor. Born in Bound Brook, New Jersey, he was educated at the University of the City of New York and at New Brunswick Theological Seminary. He served pastorates in Belleville, New Jersey, and Syracuse, New York, before becoming closely identified with Brooklyn, where he led the Central Presbyterian Church and later the Brooklyn Tabernacle. Talmage gained national and international fame through sermons that were widely syndicated in newspapers and issued in book form. He also edited religious periodicals and wrote devotional and homiletic works, becoming one of the best-known American pulpit orators of his era.
