Tecumseh

Tecumseh (c. 1768–1813) was a Shawnee leader and renowned orator who worked to unite Indigenous nations in a broad confederacy to resist U.S. territorial expansion in the early nineteenth century. With his brother Tenskwatawa (the Prophet), he helped build a political and spiritual movement centered at Prophetstown (near present-day Lafayette, Indiana). Tecumseh traveled widely to seek alliances among Native peoples and later allied with Britain during the War of 1812. He was killed at the Battle of the Thames in 1813. Tecumseh left no known writings; his legacy survives through recorded speeches and reported statements.
