Theodor Billroth

Theodor Billroth (1829–1894) was a German-born Austrian surgeon and medical professor who became one of the leading figures in 19th-century operative medicine. After medical studies in Germany, he built his career in Austria, where he held major academic and clinical posts and helped shape modern surgical training. Billroth is especially known as a pioneer of abdominal surgery. In 1881 he performed the first successful partial gastrectomy for gastric cancer, and his name remains attached to the Billroth I and Billroth II procedures for reconstruction after stomach resection. He also published influential surgical writings and case-based clinical studies.
