Theodor Seuss Geisel (Dr. Seuss)

Theodor Seuss Geisel began using the pen name “Seuss” after being forced to stop writing for his college humor magazine, Dartmouth Jack-O-Lantern, as a punishment for getting caught drinking alcohol with friends in his dorm room. Upon graduating, Geisel continued using the pen name for the prose and cartoons he published, eventually adding “Dr.” to the beginning. Dr Seuss’s first children’s book, And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street, was rejected dozens of times before it was eventually published in 1937. Dr. Seuss’s prolific career as a writer of children’s literature would span more than half a century.
