Thomas Babington (Lord Macaulay)
Thomas Babington Macaulay, 1st Baron Macaulay (1800–1859), was a British Whig politician, historian, and essayist. Educated at Trinity College, Cambridge, he gained early fame for his literary criticism and political writing. Macaulay served as a Member of Parliament and held office as Secretary at War and Paymaster-General. In 1834 he joined the Supreme Council of India, where he wrote the “Minute on Indian Education” (1835) and helped draft the Indian Penal Code. His major historical work, *The History of England from the Accession of James II*, achieved wide popularity for its vivid narrative style. He was raised to the peerage in 1857.
