Thomas Bailey Aldrich

Thomas Bailey Aldrich (1836–1907) was an American poet, short-story writer, and editor associated with New England literary circles. Born in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, he spent part of his youth in Louisiana before returning north. Aldrich gained early notice for his poetry and later became known for polished verse and fiction, including the novel *The Story of a Bad Boy* (1870). He contributed to leading magazines and moved in the company of prominent writers of his day. From 1881 to 1890 he served as editor of *The Atlantic Monthly*, helping shape the magazine’s literary profile. He died in Boston, Massachusetts.
