Thomas Campbell

Thomas Campbell (1777–1844) was a Scottish poet whose early fame rested on the long poem *The Pleasures of Hope* (1799), a work of moral reflection and political sympathy that became widely read in Britain. He is also known for patriotic and martial lyrics, including “Hohenlinden” (1803), inspired by the Battle of Hohenlinden. Born in Glasgow, Campbell studied at the University of Glasgow and later lived for periods in London and on the Continent. He helped found the Literary Association of the Friends of Poland in London and was elected Lord Rector of the University of Glasgow (1826–1829).
