Thomas Dekker

Thomas Dekker (c. 1572–1632) was an English Elizabethan and Jacobean dramatist and pamphleteer. Active in London’s commercial theatre, he wrote for several companies and frequently collaborated with other playwrights, including Thomas Middleton, John Webster, and John Ford. Dekker is best known for the city comedy *The Shoemaker’s Holiday* (1599), celebrated for its lively depiction of urban life and its sympathetic portrayal of ordinary citizens. He also produced popular prose pamphlets and satirical social commentary, notably *The Gull’s Hornbook* (1609), a witty guide to fashionable behavior. His career was marked by financial instability and periods of imprisonment for debt.
