Thomas Ken

Thomas Ken (1637–1711) was an English Anglican bishop and hymn writer, remembered for shaping English devotional song. Educated at Winchester College and New College, Oxford, he became a chaplain and later served as Bishop of Bath and Wells (1685–1691). Ken is closely associated with the doxology beginning “Praise God, from whom all blessings flow,” widely sung to the tune “Old 100th,” and with morning and evening hymns such as “Awake, my soul, and with the sun” and “Glory to thee, my God, this night.” In 1691 he refused to swear allegiance to William III and Mary II and was deprived of his bishopric.
