Thomas Macaulay

Thomas Babington Macaulay, 1st Baron Macaulay (1800–1859), was a British historian, essayist, and Whig politician. Educated at Trinity College, Cambridge, he gained early fame for his essays and for his oratory in Parliament. He served as a Member of Parliament and held office as Secretary at War, and later sat on the Supreme Council of India, where he helped shape educational policy. Macaulay is best known for his multi‑volume *The History of England from the Accession of James the Second* and for the narrative poems collected as *Lays of Ancient Rome*. He was raised to the peerage in 1857.
