Tomas Luis de Victoria

Tomás Luis de Victoria (c. 1548–1611) was a Spanish Renaissance composer and Catholic priest, celebrated for his sacred choral music. Born in Ávila, he trained in Rome, where he served as a singer and later became chapelmaster at the Collegium Germanicum. Ordained a priest, he published influential collections of Masses, motets, and hymns noted for expressive intensity and refined polyphony. In 1587 he returned to Spain and worked in Madrid as chaplain and musician to the convent of the Descalzas Reales. His best-known works include the *Officium Defunctorum* (1605), a landmark setting for the funeral rites.
