Truman Capote

Truman Capote spent a lonely, turbulent early childhood in the U.S. South. At age 9, he moved to NYC with his mother and stepfather, and began to write daily at the age of 12. Capote also wrote for his high school’s publications. Although he didn’t attend college, Capote attracted literary acclaim his short stories, winning the O. Henry Award for his story “Shut a Final Door” at age 24. He went on to write several literary classics, including the novella Breakfast at Tiffany’s and the true crime novel In Cold Blood. Capote was openly homosexual and spent most of his life partnered to fellow writer Jack Dunphy. Capote battled addictions to drugs and alcohol and died of liver cancer at age 59.
