Tryon Edwards
Tryon Edwards (1809–1894) was an American Congregationalist minister, theologian, and editor best known for compiling quotations. Born in New York, he was educated at Amherst College and later studied theology at Yale. Edwards served as a pastor in several Congregational churches and became widely read for his practical religious writing and moral reflections. His lasting reputation rests chiefly on *A Dictionary of Thoughts* (1908), a large anthology of aphorisms and passages arranged by subject, which helped popularize the use of indexed quotations for preaching, teaching, and general reading. He also published sermons and devotional works during his lifetime.
