Vijaya Lakshmi Pandit

Vijaya Lakshmi Pandit (1900–1990) was an Indian diplomat and politician and the sister of Jawaharlal Nehru. A prominent figure in India’s public life, she represented the country abroad in senior diplomatic posts, serving as India’s ambassador to the Soviet Union, the United States, and the United Kingdom. In 1953, she became President of the United Nations General Assembly, a landmark role that placed her at the center of postwar international diplomacy. Known for her advocacy of India’s interests on the world stage, Pandit helped shape the nation’s early foreign relations and international profile.
