Vilayanur Ramachandran

Vilayanur S. Ramachandran (born 1951) is an Indian-born neuroscientist known for research in behavioral neurology and the neuroscience of perception. Trained as a physician, he earned his M.D. from Stanley Medical College in Madras (now Chennai) and later obtained a Ph.D. from Trinity College, University of Cambridge. He became widely recognized for studies of phantom limb pain and the use of mirror visual feedback, as well as investigations into body image, synesthesia, and visual perception. Ramachandran has served as a professor in the Department of Psychology at the University of California, San Diego, and has written popular science books including *Phantoms in the Brain* and *The Tell-Tale Brain*.
