Violeta Parra

Violeta Parra (1917–1967) was a Chilean folklorist, singer-songwriter, visual artist, and poet whose work helped shape modern Chilean cultural identity. She traveled widely through Chile collecting and preserving traditional songs, stories, and rural musical styles, bringing them to new audiences through performance and recording. As a composer, she wrote influential songs that blended folk forms with personal and social themes, and she became a foundational figure in the Nueva Canción movement. Parra also produced visual art, including tapestries and paintings, and in 1964 exhibited at the Louvre’s Museum of Decorative Arts. She died in Santiago in 1967.
