Vladimir Nabokov
Vladimir Vladimirovich Nabokov (1899–1977) was a Russian-American novelist, poet, translator, and literary scholar. Born in Saint Petersburg, he left Russia after the 1917 Revolution and lived in Europe before moving to the United States in 1940. Nabokov wrote in both Russian and English, gaining international fame for the controversial novel *Lolita* (1955) and the formally inventive *Pale Fire* (1962). He also produced acclaimed translations and criticism, including a multi-volume translation of Pushkin’s *Eugene Onegin*. In addition to literature, he was an accomplished lepidopterist, publishing scientific work on butterflies.
