Walter Pater

Walter Horatio Pater (1839–1894) was an English essayist and literary critic associated with the Aesthetic movement. Educated at Queen’s College, Oxford, he became a fellow of Brasenose College, where he taught and wrote on art, literature, and philosophy. His influential book *Studies in the History of the Renaissance* (1873) helped shape late-Victorian ideas about art and sensibility, while his novel *Marius the Epicurean* (1885) explored ethics and spiritual experience in the Roman world. Pater also published *Imaginary Portraits* (1887) and *Appreciations* (1889). He died in Oxford in 1894.
