Walter Payton

Walter Payton (1954–1999) was an American professional football player and one of the NFL’s most celebrated running backs. He played his entire 13-season career with the Chicago Bears (1975–1987), becoming the league’s all-time leading rusher at the time of his retirement. Nicknamed “Sweetness,” Payton was known for his durability, versatility, and relentless running style. He won the NFL Most Valuable Player award in 1977 and helped lead the Bears to victory in Super Bowl XX. Payton was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1993. He is frequently quoted in sports writing for his work ethic and competitive spirit.
