Walter Raleigh

Sir Walter Raleigh (c. 1552–1618) was an English courtier, soldier, explorer, and writer of the Elizabethan era. He rose to prominence at the court of Queen Elizabeth I and received royal favor and offices. Raleigh promoted English overseas expansion and was involved in early attempts to establish colonies in North America, including ventures linked with Roanoke. He also led expeditions to South America in search of El Dorado. After Elizabeth’s death, he fell from favor under James I, was imprisoned in the Tower of London, and later released to lead another expedition. He was executed in 1618.
