Wendy Wasserstein

Wendy Wasserstein (1950–2006) was an American playwright and essayist. Born in Brooklyn, New York, she became known for witty, observant works about contemporary women and Jewish American life. Her best-known play, *The Heidi Chronicles*, premiered in 1988 and won the 1989 Pulitzer Prize for Drama as well as the Tony Award for Best Play. She also wrote *The Sisters Rosensweig* (1992), another widely produced play. Wasserstein contributed essays and commentary in addition to her theater writing. She died in 2006, leaving a body of work that helped shape late-20th-century American stage comedy and social satire.
