William Macneile Dixon

William Macneile Dixon (1866–1946) was a Scottish literary scholar, essayist, and professor of English literature. He held the Chair of English Literature at the University of Glasgow, where he became known as an influential teacher and lecturer. Dixon wrote widely on English literature and cultural life, publishing essays and addresses that brought literary criticism to a broad audience. His work often combined close reading with reflections on history, education, and national character, and he was valued for a clear, cultivated prose style. Remembered primarily for his lectures and critical essays, Dixon helped shape the study and public appreciation of English literature in early twentieth-century Scotland.
