William McKinley
William McKinley (1843–1901) was the 25th President of the United States, serving from 1897 until his assassination in 1901. Born in Niles, Ohio, he served in the Union Army during the American Civil War and later practiced law. McKinley represented Ohio in the U.S. House of Representatives and became governor of Ohio before winning the presidency. His administration is associated with high protective tariffs, the Spanish–American War of 1898, and the annexation of territories including Puerto Rico, Guam, and the Philippines. Though not a literary author, his speeches and public statements are frequently quoted in political history.
