William Motherwell
William Motherwell (1797–1835) was a Scottish poet, antiquary, and journalist noted for his work on traditional ballads and songs. Born in Glasgow, he developed an early interest in folklore and oral tradition, collecting material that helped preserve Scotland’s popular verse. His major publication, *Minstrelsy: Ancient and Modern* (1827), brought together ballads and songs and reflected his commitment to documenting vernacular culture. Motherwell also pursued a career in the press and became editor of the *Glasgow Courier*, where he combined literary interests with political and civic commentary. He died in 1835, leaving a reputation as a significant nineteenth-century collector and man of letters.
