William Ralph Inge

William Ralph Inge (1860–1954) was an English Anglican priest, theologian, and author. He became a prominent churchman and served as Dean of St Paul’s Cathedral, a post in which his public reputation grew. Inge was widely known by the nickname “the Gloomy Dean,” reflecting the sombre tone often associated with his outlook and commentary. Alongside his clerical duties, he wrote extensively, contributing to religious and intellectual discussion in his time. Remembered for his combination of ecclesiastical leadership and literary output, Inge remains a notable figure in the Church of England and in early twentieth-century theological debate.
