William Samuel Johnson

William Samuel Johnson (1727–1819) was an American statesman and jurist from Connecticut. He served as a delegate to the Constitutional Convention, contributing to the framing of the United States Constitution. Johnson later became one of Connecticut’s first United States Senators. Beyond public office, he also played a leading role in American higher education, serving as president of Columbia College (now Columbia University). Remembered for his work in law, governance, and education, Johnson helped shape early national institutions during the founding era and remained an influential figure in Connecticut and the broader United States in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries.
